Beach Decor Inspirations

About a month ago, our family went with another family down to Margaret River for a short holiday. Margaret River is a fantastic wine region in South Western Australia, close to the ocean, and it is absolutely beautiful down there.  We actually rented a little house in Prevelly, which is the little village where the actual Margaret River meets the Ocean.

Needless to say, we had a few great, great days!!! We did long beach walks with the kids, and even my partner started collecting seashells! On one beach walk he spotted an area with millions of tiny little shells, and spent close to 2 hours in that one spot, picking out miniscule but stunning mini-shells. (He got a little sunburned … ). When he brought them all home, he washed them and poured them in an empty beer bottle for storage and enjoyment! It actually looked gorgeous, if you have a bottle (or maybe a nice glass vase or something ;) ) and fill it with tiny little shells, it can make a stunning and engaging beach decor piece. When it was sitting on the kitchen table, whoever was sitting there had the bottle in their hands looking at the shells and admiring their beauty. Kind of looks a little rustic, but that even adds to the beauty of it.

Tiny Treasures

The house we stayed in was very unique and charming, too. It consisted of an array of different pieces of furniture, and lots of home made or self decorated/painted things, walls, etc. I had to take my camera and take a few pictures of what the owner of the house had done, I was so impressed! Have a look (unfortunately this picture is not quite sharp, but I think you can still see how nice it is, and how easy it would be to make yourself at home):

Or have a look at this artsy little window (obviously you could put much more fitting ornaments or beach items in the frame, to make it look really stunning; the cups were just there, don’t mind them, please! ;) )

Or how easy would this holder for kitchen utensils be to make? All you need is a container of your choice, preferably glass, tile adhesive, grout and the sea glass, and you should be on your way!

Turn Your Seashells Into Artwork!

Last October I had my parents visiting me from Germany. They loved to go to the beaches here and walk along the shores of the Indian Ocean. On their leisurely holiday strolls they also found quite a collection of seashells (well, most of them were collected by two very keen little shell seekers, also called grandchildren ;) ). Because of that fact, even quite unsuspecting seashells were treasured very much by my parents.

Now, I have to say that both of them are not very artistic (sorry, guys!). Not at all. So I was even more surprised when my dad emailed me a few months after their visit and attached a picture of what they had done with all these shells. It literally blew me away! Why hadn’t I had an idea like that?? – Here is what they did:

Now isn’t that absolutely amazing? Can you see how even quite ordinary seashells, when put together like this, can turn out to be a work of art? Now, my parents “glued” the seashells into a kind of white paste (you will have to ask at a craft store) which dried and the seashells stuck to it. They then had it professionally framed.

I know, this can cost quite a lot of money, but I have to be honest with you: Seeing the result, I doubt if it would have looked similar stunning if just framed with a cheaper frame. Sometimes it pays off to pay a little more, you will enjoy the end result so much more.

I take my hat off to my parents – usually I am the “artistic” one in the family!

Beach Home Decor Ideas – A Bowl Full Of Shells…

The little thoughtful accents around the house are what make it a home. When you are decorating in the beach theme, seashells are really one of the “Must-Haves” when you accessorize throughout your living space. There is so much you can do with one ore two or many seashells:

  • make a mirror (like I showed you in a previous blog post),
  • fill a nice glass or acrylic vase with sand and place your “findings” from the beach on top, it looks stunning!
  • find a nice bowl and fill it with bought (or found) seashells
  • place a single big shell in a special spot on a display table
  • have pictures of shells on the wall
  • and much, much more!

Here is one of my very simple creations; nothing special, I just want to show you how easy it can be:

Home Made Beach Decor – Paint A Picture!

Flowers On The Beach

Flowers On The Beach

It has been a while since I posted on my blog, shame on me! But it is just sometimes the way that life gets way ahead of you and there doesn’t seem to be time for anything anymore. I hope it will get better soon.

Today I quickly wanted to share one of my craft ideas with you. I love to paint and draw, and I found that most times I do so I end up doing some picture of the beach or something related to it (shells etc.).

Even if the resulting pictures might not look overly fantastic just looking at them, quite often when you just put them in a nice frame they look totally transformed.

So don’t be shy, just try and start painting or drawing your favorite beach scenes, and let yourself be surprised at what you can actually create! Plus, when you hang the pictures in your home they can be a point of discussion if you have got friends over to socialize.

I have attached a picture I did in a 3 hour painting course on a holiday in Queensland.

Have fun painting!

Decorating With Seashells – A Seashell Mirror

O.k., here we go! This is officially my very first blog entry – I guess I have to start somewhere! When I first started this website, I hadn’t really thought a lot about the decor in my house. I was just very interested in everything “beach”, because even just thinking about a beach makes me feel good.

In the process I started having a good look around the house, and I noticed that I DO have a lot of decor items which ARE actually related to the beach theme! I will show you the pieces I have around my house over time.

One item is actually one of my favorites, and not only because I made it all myself. It is this Seashell Mirror which I have hanging in my hallway now.

I collected the seashells all by myself (good fun!) on a beach in Wilsons Promontory National Park (southern most point of the Australian mainland), and when I got home I cleaned them all, went to the nearest Craft Shop and got a rustic mirror with a wooden frame. I then painted the frame in white so that a little of the wood could still be seen, and stuck the shells on. That’s it! Real easy, and I think the seashell mirror looks great. I love this rustic look, and it is a constant reminder of my holidays, too!

See, it doesn’t have to be hard to be creative with seashells found on the beach. And I find mirrors are always a good way to start adding decor to your house, they really can enhance any room.

I would actually love to hear from anybody who has done some crafty things with items from the beach, as well. We could all get inspiration from sharing our ideas and craft projects.
